Embedded test systems
PCB production test systems
Two Arduino-based test systems that check circuit boards for voltage faults, shorts and resistance issues in production.
Summary
For a manufacturer in Malaysia, we designed and programmed two low-cost test systems for board validation in production and quality assurance. Both are built to be reliable and simple enough for on-site technicians to run.
The problem
Circuit boards had to be validated before leaving the line, but commercial test equipment is expensive and overbuilt for the job. The team needed fast, repeatable tests that any technician could operate.
What we built
- A voltage tester that checks 15 test points against nominal values and tolerances, switching between points automatically with relays
- An automated bridge resistor test that confirms the expected voltage change between two resistor states
- A short circuit and resistance tester covering 9 contact points and all 36 unique pairs
- Resistance measurement that tells a hard short apart from a high-resistance fault or an open circuit
- Full wiring schematics, a locally sourceable bill of materials and commented Arduino code
- A configuration section for test specifications and a one-page operating guide
Highlights
- Fully automatic test cycles, no manual switching by the operator
- Hardware sourced and assembled locally, keeping costs low
- Test thresholds stay configurable as specifications change
Tech stack
- Arduino
- Relay switching
- ADC voltage divider
- Serial output to PC
Status
Delivered in 2026.
